In today's training I experimented with this auto heat skinning script based on Baran and Popovic auto rigging research (http://www.mit.edu/~ibaran/autorig/):

It produced cool starting results:
I also recommend a couple of tools i used to quickly build skeleton a:
--make locator at selected vertex tool
--make joint hierarchy at selected, in order of selected tool
I recommend checking out the (na_makeJointAtSelectedComponent ()) function I wrote in (na_segment.mel)... dependencies can be found by looking through these files i wrote: scripts
I also highly recommend Brad Clark's Inspired Advanced Rigging and Deformations.
